Washington World Fellows Domestic Programing
Location: Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA
Estimated Dates: Early to mid August
Informational Pre-Departure Sessions:
Fellows will participate in a series of pre-departure orientations, including a Welcome Day celebration in the spring to acquaint students, families, and program directors with one another. In addition to the Welcome Day, students will be required to participate in several online webinar seminars to prepare them for the program.
1st Year Programing:
During the summer between their sophomore and junior years, fellows will take part in our Domestic Program in Eastern Washington. This immersive experience includes the study of the Spanish Language, cultural integration through living with Spanish peers, and engaging in a variety of activities related to academic and college preparation and cross-cultural exchange.
Academic Courses:
Students will take Spanish language and culture courses taught by accredited teachers.
Lodging:
Students are paired with students from our sister program, World Fellows España, and housed in dorm rooms at Eastern Washington University.
2nd Year Programing:
Between their junior and senior years, fellows will engage in a local advocacy project and take part in our College Bootcamp. This Bootcamp offers crucial elements such as college application assistance, insightful college tours, and preparation for financial aid consideration. The fellows will also have access to leadership opportunities, which may include civic engagement activities, internship/externship experiences, and international student forums.
Civic Engagement
Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in a civic education course designed by the Washington State Leadership Board. Our Domestic Program Fellows will also play a key leadership role in the WSLB’s annual Day on the Hill, where students are given the chance to meet with legislators and actively engage in the legislative process. They will also be given assistance in finding ways to become involved in local and state government.
Career Preparation
During the program, fellows will have the opportunity to work in groups and individually to design a path towards their futures. They will work on developing time management and other positive habits to improve academic performance. They will spend time researching colleges, career and technical (CT) programs, and other post-high school opportunities. By understanding the specific requirements of those pathways, they will craft portfolios that maximize their chances of acceptance. Fellows also benefit from dedicated support in completing applications by mentors and staff who provide assistance with the application essay writing.
Global Leadership
Throughout the World Fellows Domestic Advocates program, fellows will participate in sessions with their counterparts in the World Fellows España program. These sessions will discuss global social issues and how the different cultures promote and participate in advocacy. The goal is that the combined group will select an issue and develop an advocacy plan to implement in both Spain and Washington.
The Washington State Leadership Board will also remain an open resource to World Fellows students throughout their high school and college experiences.
